A 50ml bottle of perfume holds roughly 500 sprays. Most atomisers release between 0.08 and 0.12 millilitres each time you press, so the real number lands somewhere between 400 and 600 depending on the pump.

That single figure answers a surprising number of other questions, including how long a bottle lasts and what each wear actually costs you.

How long 500 sprays lasts

It depends entirely on your habit, so here are the three common ones.

• Two sprays a day. About 250 days, or a little over eight months of daily wear.
• Four sprays a day. About 125 days, so roughly four months.
• Six sprays a day. Around 83 days, which is under three months.

Very few people wear the same fragrance every single day, so in practice a 50ml bottle tends to last most owners somewhere between six months and a year.

Why the pump matters more than you'd think

Two bottles of identical size can give noticeably different mileage. A fine-mist pump at 0.07ml per press yields over 700 sprays from 50ml. A wide pump at 0.13ml gives fewer than 400. Neither is better. A finer mist spreads a smaller dose over more skin, while a heavier pump delivers a wetter, more concentrated spray.

The practical lesson is to count doses rather than presses. If your bottle has a generous pump, two sprays may equal three from a finer one.

The cost of a single wear
