Small Batch: What Limited Production Actually Means
Small batch is one of those phrases that has been marketed half to death, so let's define it before using it. It means a fragrance is produced in limited runs rather than held as permanent mass stock. Nothing more mystical than that.
What it does to the perfume in your hand is real though, and worth understanding before you decide whether it matters to you.
Freshness is the actual point
Perfume ages. Not on your skin but in the supply chain, in bulk storage and warehouses and distribution centres, under temperature swings nobody logs. A fragrance produced in enormous runs can sit for a long time between the day it was compounded and the day you first spray it, and time plus heat plus oxygen is precisely the recipe that dulls a composition. Top notes fade first. The sparkle you were promised evaporated in a warehouse.
A small production run compresses that timeline. The bottle you buy was made recently, because there was no mountain of stock for it to queue behind. With a fragrance like ours, where the opening is a soft powdery thing rather than a blast that can absorb some loss, arriving fresh isn't a luxury. It's the product working as designed.
What limited numbers ask of you
Honesty first: small batches have a cost, and you pay part of it. A run can sell out, and then the answer is waiting rather than next-day delivery. Batch cost is higher without economies of scale, which is part of what sits inside the price. And there can be minute variation between runs, since some materials shift subtly from harvest to harvest.
Mass production solved all three problems decades ago. It solved them by making perfume the way the world makes most things now, indefinitely and identically and in advance. That's a legitimate trade. It's just not the one we chose.
Small doesn't mean casual
The part of the process that never shrinks is compliance. Prima is blended to IFRA standards, complies with the EU Cosmetic Regulation and is registered in the CPNP database, the EU's notification portal for cosmetic products, exactly as a fragrance from a house a thousand times our size would be. Cruelty-free, with sustainable materials. Small batch describes the quantity. It's not an excuse note for the chemistry.
How this fits the rest of the house
We make one perfume and we make it in limited runs, and those are the same decision wearing two coats. Both trade scale for control. We wrote up the first half of that decision in why we made one perfume instead of five. The second half is simply this: a formula we care about, produced in quantities we can stand behind bottle by bottle. The 50ml eau de parfum is made that way or not at all.
What to take from the label
When any house tells you something is small batch, ask what it buys you. Sometimes the answer is genuinely nothing but the words. The version worth paying for delivers freshness you can smell in the opening, accountability you can trace to a batch, and a house that knows where every bottle went. If those are present, the phrase means something. If not, it's typography.
Ours means the runs are small because our attention is finite, and we'd rather run out than let the standard slip. People who wear Prima seem to prefer that trade. It's the same one they tend to make everywhere else.
